More than 30 teachers and over 20 employers met in Sullivan County for the 4th annual Teacher Industry Day, a workforce development event designed to align classroom instruction with regional job opportunities. Hosted by Bristol Tennessee Essential Services with support from NETWORKS Sullivan Partnership and the Tennessee Valley Authority, the program continues a 27-year effort to connect education and industry.

Teachers spent the day at local businesses, learning about hiring needs, required skills, and available career pathways for students after graduation. The event included participation from 24 industries and drew about 90 total attendees, including educators and administrators.
This connection helps educators see the range of local employment options, including positions that do not require a four-year degree, laying the groundwork for the rest of the day's activities.

Teachers Gain Direct Industry Exposure

Teacher Industry Day centers on firsthand experience. Educators toured facilities, spoke with managers, and observed operations across sectors such as manufacturing, health care, public safety, and finance.

At Seaman Corp., teachers observed textile production processes and discussed hiring expectations with staff. Company representatives emphasized the importance of reliability, attention to detail, and teamwork. Entry-level wages start at $18.50 per hour, with opportunities for advancement.

At USAntibiotics, teachers learned about domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and the role the company plays in reducing reliance on overseas supply chains. Leaders noted that many positions, including machine operator and maintenance roles, do not require advanced degrees but do require technical skills and job consistency.

Other industries that participated included:

Employers Outline Workforce Expectations

Industry representatives used the event to clarify what they look for in new hires. While technical training is important, employers consistently point to foundational skills.
Key expectations shared with teachers included:

  • Strong attendance and punctuality
  • Willingness to learn and adapt
  • Attention to detail in daily tasks
  • Basic technical and math skills
  • Performance on ACT WorkKeys assessments

Employers also encouraged educators to guide students toward available training and certifications when relevant, while reinforcing that many roles remain accessible directly after high school.

Program Enhance Workforce Alignment

Teacher Industry Day supports long-term workforce alignment by improving educators' guidance to students. When teachers understand local industries, they can better connect lesson plans to career outcomes and provide accurate guidance on job pathways.

NETWORKS Sullivan Partnership has supported similar efforts across the region, including workforce websites, hiring events, and grant-funded programs tied to education and training. Leaders said Teacher Industry Day remains one of the most consistent tools for building coordination between schools and employers.

The event also helps bridge common awareness gaps for students and families. By sharing local job trends and wage information directly with teachers, the program enables more accurate, timely communication with students, increasing awareness of accessible careers.

Local Collaboration Builds Continued Momentum

The event reflects ongoing collaboration between utilities, schools, and economic development organizations. By maintaining a consistent format and expanding industry participation, organizers aim to keep pace with regional economic changes.

As employers adjust hiring needs and adopt new technologies, Teacher Industry Day provides a structured way to share that information with educators.

Organizers plan to continue the program and explore additional ways to connect teachers with emerging industries in Sullivan County.
