Sullivan County’s Manufacturing Sector Continues to Expand and Increases Opportunity in Northeast Tennessee
December 15, 2025
Manufacturing is one of Sullivan County’s most important industries. With almost 10,000 jobs, manufacturing represents 14.4% of the county’s total workforce, the second largest sector of employment. From chemicals and plastics to fabricated metals and transportation equipment, the industry’s reach is both broad and deep.
The region’s manufacturing base encompasses the production of chemicals, fuels, paper, plastics, and wood; aerospace, automotive suppliers; and processed food, textiles, and clothing. Together, these businesses form a stable and diverse foundation for continued industrial growth.
Strength in Metals and Materials
Northeast Tennessee has become a hub for metal fabrication and primary metal manufacturing. Since 2011, the region’s labor shed has experienced a 12% increase in primary metal manufacturing jobs. This growth is supported by steel and metal-related manufacturers, which employ several thousand people in fabricated metal product manufacturing.
These companies benefit from targeted workforce initiatives that prepare residents for technical roles. Collaborative programs between local manufacturers and institutions such as Northeast State Community College ensure that new workers are trained in the skills these industries need most.
Access to Major Markets
Sullivan County’s strategic location strengthens its competitiveness. Within 300 miles of 11 automotive original equipment manufacturers, manufacturers in the region can efficiently reach key industry players across the southeastern United States. This proximity reduces logistics costs and supports just-in-time delivery for suppliers serving the automotive, aerospace, and advanced materials sectors.
Eastman Chemical, headquartered in Kingsport, demonstrates the depth of the region’s industrial capacity. As one of the largest employers in Northeast Tennessee, Eastman Chemical supplies materials to the global automotive industry and remains a cornerstone of the regional economy.

Their programs in engineering, materials science, and manufacturing technology produce skilled workers ready to meet industry demands.
